Located amidst the luscious greenery of the Catskill Mountains, the unique forked shape of the Y House makes an organic mark on a distinctive site with expansive views. The structure is one of world-renowned architect Steven Holl’s few, and revolutionary, residential designs.
The geometry of the Y House exists in reverse of public and private, with bedrooms below and common living space above. Bedrooms are intimate, while the living area and kitchen are expansive and open in design. The inner sanctum of the home has a vast hanging space for an art collection framed by windows with views of the Catskills. The exterior is composed of a steel roof and frame and high-quality cedar siding stained a bright iron-oxide red. The two balconies finishing each arm of the home act as passive solar-devices by maximizing winter sun and protecting interiors from excessive summer rays.
Included on the thirty-three acres are a swimmable pond and a boathouse designed by Austrian architect Peter Liaunig. On the walls are a series of geometric abstraction frescoes by acclaimed painter David Novros chosen to embrace the color palette of the natural surroundings.
Time magazine declared Holl as America's best architect for his buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye. The Y House is a perfect representation of Holl’s genius creating classic 21st-century luminist design, borrowing from 19th-century luminist painters to blend space and light.
The Y House is located three hours away from New York City, and only an hour from Albany and Hudson, a beloved cultural destination of the Hudson Valley.
