The Sullivan Residence, an elegant brick townhouse on Hudson's Warren Street, is a fine example of the region’s 19th-century Italianate architecture. A rare single-family residence on Warren Street, the home has been painstakingly restored to its original grandeur, preserving details like carved marble mantles, soaring ceilings, decorative moldings, wide plank wood floors, and classic two-over-two windows.
From the sidewalk, terracotta steps take you to the first floor and the building's grand foyer. Making an extraordinary first impression are the residence's double parlors, each featuring marble fireplaces and framed by a sweeping arch with intricately carved details. A bright reading room with a cozy fireplace gives way to the stylish kitchen with a Viking stove and black marble countertops. A turned staircase leads to the second and third floors with five bedrooms, two light-filled offices, and three additional bathrooms all outfitted with tasteful fixtures from Waterworks.
The back of the house has a gorgeous Knightsbridge-inspired garden with abundant plantings, bluestone verandah, and a whimsical shamiana canopy for dining outdoors. A newly constructed and fully insulated garage with smooth concrete floors opens to the back street and presents the perfect opportunity for a home gym or art studio.
The Sullivan Residence provides old-world elegance and privacy surrounded by all the resources that Warren Street has to offer. The home is just around the corner from the town's Saturday Farmer's Market, as well as Hudson's notable antique stores, galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants.
History
In the 19th century, the Picturesque movement, ushered in by the Hudson River School of painters, blossomed all over the region. The movement affected landscape design, artists, and most notably, architects in the flourishing epicenter of culture and commerce in the Hudson Valley - the town of Hudson. The Sullivan Residence, located at 552 Warren Street, is a rare fully-restored example of the Picturesque movement's more romantic effects on the town's classical Federal-style brownstones.
552 Warren was the home of prominent and immensely successful photography duo the Sullivan Brothers for nearly two decades, leaving a legacy of grandeur and visual beauty. Since then, the building has been home to the Hudson Museum of Photography, and in its most recent tenure, an impeccably restored single-family home - a certain scarcity on Hudson's main street.
